There are certain things most people wouldn't dream of trying to send abroad. Explosive materials, live animals and weapons are probably right at the top of the list of things you're pretty unlikely to try and get shipped to the other side of the world.

However, some people have tried to have such items couriered on many occasions - sometimes on purpose, sometimes out of ignorance. For people who aren't sure exactly what is and isn't allowed to be shipped by courier within and outside of the UK, delivery firms have drawn up lists of prohibited items.

The above examples are on this list as they would clearly pose a risk to health and safety if they were sent through a courier. However, there are also other items that you perhaps would not have expected to find on the prohibited list. Lottery tickets, money, passports and stamps which have not been franked will be refused by most courier companies for various reasons.

If your package is found to contain such items, then you are at risk of having it sent straight back to you. If you've gone to the trouble of organising for a package to be delivered and wrapped it securely, then you certainly won't want to run the risk of having it returned. By sending dangerous items you are also putting the staff who work for the courier company at risk and this will not be appreciated by the firm involved.

If you are unsure about an item and do not know if it is on the prohibited list, then contact the carrier or search on their website to find out. It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you send your goods through an online parcel delivery service then customer service staff there will be more than happy to find out and provide you with any advice you need.

Rules also change from country to country, so don't think just because you have been fine sending an item to the Middle East in the past, that you'll also be OK sending it to China. Always seek advice if you're not sure - it can save you a considerable amount of time, hassle and inconvenience.
