If you listen to Sydney Johnston in front of live eBay seminar audience she asks everyone first an really easy question. More often than not people get the answer wrong. It is all to do with how people percieve things and experienced internet business owners have learned to think outside the box.
Your level of achievement in an virtual business is going to hinge on your preceptions an how open and imaginative you are.
Sydney Johnston was in on the ground floor with sites like eBay but she has never viewed it like the general public tends to. The question she asks her live audience sounds like a no brainer: "What is eBay?" But, it's a trick question.
What she is after is feedback from the audience as to their perception of eBay and what it brings to the table and most often peoples minds are limited as to it possibilities.
But that's her point. She wants her audience to see the endless opportunity eBay brings to the table as one of the top five traffic sites on the internet.
She wants her students to see eBay as more of an opportunity than a mere auction site.
Here's how Sydney stumbled onto the real potential of a site like eBay. "I started selling not real rare but a hundred dollars and up books. I accidentally built a list of about 250 serious book collectors and I started sending out emails."
It is the ability to seize opportunity that makes them the succesful enterprenuers of the online age. The know eBay as the door opening not the final transaction of the sales process. Where as the vast majority of people concentrate on a single transaction.
People who understand marketing see it differently and despite the huge numbers that visit the website these people are a tiny minority. The field is wide open and is unlikely to change.
For marketing specialists eBay is not an end in itself it is simply a way station. A busy, well trafficked way station that can provide them with endless customer lists that can then be worked off the site.
It's all in the follow up. According to Sydney few people take advantage of this valuable business lead. Most dealers on eBay are happy to sell an item and be done with it.
A savvy eBay enterpreneur doesn't think the same as everyone else and once that first transaction has taken place is forever looking to develop the customer relationship further.
Success on eBay is about tying products together and expanding the newly formed relationship.
If you sell a set of pearl earings what other items would the customer also be looking at buying in the future maybe a matching ring or bracelet.
To be hugely succesful in the eBay market place you have to see the first transaction as the gateway to possibility and work on improving the customer experience all the way. Do this and you will expose yourself to the opportunity to net pockets of cash from happy customers.
