Adults aren't the only ones that want to look good. Many teenagers want to have golden skin too. They approach tanning salons to get a great base tan before they go on summer vacation. They also want a nice color for big events that will take place including prom and graduation.

In some areas there are laws against minors tanning without they consent of their parent or guardian. It may be 16 or it may 18 years of age that they have to be to do so on their own. If there are no such laws in your area then it is up to you to set the policies and procedures for your tanning salon.

It is recommended that you don't turn those teenagers away that want to tan though as long as you go about it legally. They often have their own money to pay for the services or their parents do it for them. They love to buy new products and many of them have the time and the desire to tan all year long. This can help your business over the slower months too.

It is recommended that you have a parent or guardian sign a release in order for their minor to use the tanning facility. This is just a best practice and you need to also have contact information in the event of any emergency. Teenagers have a way of getting what they want so be careful of forged consent forms. It is a good idea to have the parent or guardian come in to complete the paperwork to avoid such issues.

For the most part though many parents don't seem to mind that their children are tanning. They may even pay for it as a gift for their child. It isn't uncommon for the adult and the child to come in at the same time for appointments either. You may want to offer discounts for family tanning memberships for this reason.

The release form you offer needs to have some useful information on it. Make sure both the parent and the teenager understand it. In fact, you should have both of them sign it just to make sure that is clear. Offer them information on safety, risks, and what your policies are the tanning salon. This will help you avoid common problems down the road.

In addition to having the parents sign a permission slip, each minor should be signing one as well. All of the information on the tanning process, risks, using eye protection, and other information you need them to know needs to be on it. To reduce the amount of paperwork, you can just have two signature lines on each form. One for the person tanning and one for their parent or guardian if it is applicable.

Most teenagers that do approach a tanning salon are going to be very responsible with the equipment. If you find this isn't the case you can talk to them or you can cancel their membership and ask that they don't come back. One common problem is being late for appointments but they will quickly learn what your policy on that is.
