When celebrating an occasion with your mother, gift ideas need to be passed through a checklist such as this, to try and make sure you're not, inadvertently of course, making a huge and sometimes hurtful mistake.
1) Is this something your mum can actually use?
Is this gift likely to trigger an allergy she has? For instance, a food allergy to gluten, lactose, shelled fish, or strawberries? Perhaps her skin gets irritated by certain types of jewellery metal? If it's electronic and she's not comfortable trying to work out electronics, will there be someone on hand to help her? If you are thinking of getting her jewellery, does she have the necessary part pierced?
2) Is this something she'll want to use?
Does it offend her beliefs or sabotage a goal she's working on? For instance, if your mum's a practicing Christian, it's probably not a good idea to get her a Madonna CD or a bestselling bosom heaver.
If she's trying to loose weight and her plan advocates reducing or cutting out chocolate (please show me the plan that doesn't), it's not nice to present her with a huge chocolate gift basket. That's just cruel. And think ... before you give her that treasure chest of specialty olives that make you drool, does your mum actually like olives? Or do they make her retch? Before you click the "Buy Now" button to purchase that adorable pink sweater, how does mum feel about the color pink?
3) Are you using this gift simply to give her a hint?
No matter how loving the thought behind this sort of gift is, it will, most of the time, offend and hurt your mum. And It most probably won't trigger the sort of life-affirming change you were hoping for.
What are we talking about? Oh ... that super deluxe body odour control system, hypnotist McKenna's 'I Can Make You Thin', the latest 'Clear The Clutter In 7 Days footwear.com">boot camp, ... You know, the sort of gift that can trigger a desperate, private (because she'll probably never say this to your face), soul crushing response such as, "Does this mean I smell?"
