You have wracked your brain for a birthday gift for your sports obsessed boyfriend. You have gone through the regular lists: wallet (he has one), car (not on your budget), gas (practical, but not very fun), tie (boring), until you think of something he has longed talked about: NFL Sunday Ticket. You consult his friends and they unanimously tell you (and practically shout) that if you get him an upgrade to his current DIRECTV subscription, you will be the coolest girlfriend ever. Even if you make the upgrade a birthday/Christmas/Valentine's Day/anniversary gift all in one, he'll go nuts for it.
The only problem is, you don't really know what it is, or what it entails. You had never heard the term "League Pass Cable Package" before today. Fear not. Before you can say Touchdown, we'll get you up to speed.
Frist, you are about to introduce a lot of football into your life. A lot. But this isn't all bad. You have been a fan of the sport ever since you were introduced to "Hard Knocks" (the Dallas Cowboys version) last fall, and you wouldn't mind getting to know it a little better. Well, here's your chance. Instead of your man having access to just one game every Sunday on local TV, he is about to have access to every game, even "out of market" games. That is to say, did your boy grow up in one city but now live away from it? No problem. Has he complained in the past about having to go to a local bar to watch the game he really wants to see? No more. Whether it's the Redskins he loves or the Seattle Seahawks, he will have access to the NFC East, NFC West, and everything in between, all from the comfort of his house. He can invite his friends over to watch games on his HD screen (which he may buy just for this purpose) and they will say things like, "But I thought you just had the basic satellite TV package?" He'll respond smugly, "I did, until my girlfriend got me the upgrade." BAM, instant popularity.
He will also get something called "red zone" channel, which he can watch and you won't hear the end of it. Basically it jumps from game to game as teams are in the "red zone", which means within 20 yards of the other team's endzone. This auto-jump is so that you can always watch the game when a team is about to score. It's like a live highlight channel and it'll blow his mind.
But while it's great to give him 24-hour access to the NFL Network and high definition ESPN, you may be thinking, "what's in it for me?" A few things. Paying to get an upgrade to your man's subscription isn't only going to benefit him. With a premium package, you too will have access to movie channels like HBO and Starz. You watch a football game; he watches a Jennifer Anniston movie. Even steven. And while he isn't watching football, you can watch the Style Network! Easily a touchdown for all involved.
