There is an invisible energy that runs through your body that the Chinese call chi. It is the life force that gives us life and vitality. There are 49 world cultures that refer to chi in their own language. It is a universal concept that is woven into these cultures and how to direct it and use it is taught to everyone as a natural part of life and healing.

In Western culture, we believe in the science of energy at the molecular level. Although Western medicine is great at treating injuries and sudden onset illness, it does not embrace the concept of life force that governs all aspects of our life, including our health. Chronic disease is a good example of the continued disruption of chi or life force. By developing the ability to direct our own life force we can improve our own health and vitality.

Becoming aware that you have a life force that flows inside you is relatively easy. The simplest way is to rub your hands together briskly until they feel very warm. Now slowly separate your hands until they are about half an inch apart. Notice the subtle feeling of tingling, pressure or a feeling like cotton wool between your palms. You are sensing the chi that is flowing in and around your body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners work with the meridians, which are the invisible pipelines in the body that move energy from one place to another.

Just like pipes in a house, meridians can become plugged or blocked. Acupuncture and acupressure are two ways to restore the flow of chi in your body. You can also use concentration, breathing and visualization to do the same thing. With diligent practice you can get very good at feeling and directing your life force to heal your body.

Try this exercise to get you started. Sit comfortably in a chair with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor. Place your hands in your lap with your fingers separated from one another. Gently close your eyes and observe your breathing. Notice your in-breath and your out-breath, in and out. Now imagine that when you breathe in, you are pulling energy up from your tailbone up and over the top of your head. When you breathe out, imagine the energy falling down the front of your body. Breathe in, pull the energy up from the tail bone and up over the top of your head. Breathe out and let the energy fall down the front of you.

You may notice your body is relaxed and your mind is still. You may even notice that your body is warm and tingling. This indicates that your chi is active and your body is responding. If you are one of those who experiences pain from time to time. Doing this exercise may unblock the stuck energy that causes pain.

Now that you have got used to directing your chi up your back and down your front, you can practice directing it other places in your body. By using your concentration and focus along with your breathing you can visualize directing your chi into places within you that don't feel well. If you have a sore knee or an arthritic finger, imagine directing your chi there. Keep practicing until you have no pain there. Who says you can't heal yourself?
