How do biology and love connect? Consider this:
Without sexual desire and attraction, the human race would become extinct in one generation.
Nature endows the male with a more potent sex drive than the female. Only the male needs to climax for conception to occur.
The female libido peaks during ovulation, a time when conception has the highest likelihood of success. Monogamous marriage is a social convention based on religious and legal precepts. The biological drive of most male mammals motivates them to impregnate as many females as possible. This leads to testosterone driven competition and violence between males. In polygamous human societies, the man provides for multiple wives and not visa versa. High walls enclose Middle Eastern harems to prevent the pampered wives from straying. During medieval times, eunuchs guarded the premises. In fundamentalist Mormon communities, nineteenth century covenants confine the wives to within a fenced compound, where they are "protected" against the sins of the outside world. A wife dares not breach the gate without an escort.
Oxytocin is the hormone of labor and delivery. It induces a peaceful and nurturing state in the mother, which helps assure the survival of her infant. Yet, if a stranger threatens her child, a mother can instinctively claw his eyes, bite the most vulnerable part of his neck and ultimately drive off this attacker, even if he is a physically imposing man. A childless woman would not respond with such ferocity.
In African lion prides, the alpha male impregnates all the females. If a younger challenger defeats him in a fight, then the alpha crown gets passed to the young upstart, who quickly kills any cubs born of the previous union. In this way, the new alpha male assures that his gene pool will not have to compete with that of his predecessor. Yet of all the species, only humans know that sexual union leads to pregnancy and birth. For all other species, courtship behavior is strictly instinctive. Natural selection determines that males will remain monogamous only if their presence is necessary for the protection of their offspring.
Sexual attraction and fulfillment remain the greatest motivating force in the advertisement world. For men, the promise of a successful liaison with an attractive woman increases a product's appeal. For women, the raised possibility of meeting a man of means, who can assure the survival of her offspring by raising her social standing, will increase the product's worth.
Sexual desire is wound into the double helices of our DNA. Behaviorists can counsel us in social behavior, and they can help resolve our inter gender conflicts, but they cannot change our fundamental biology.
