Curvature of the Penis

Curvature of the penis or more correctly named Peyronies disease or Cavernositis develops in some men because hard fibrous tissue, or plaques, develops along the shaft of the penis. The plaques form hard, quite thick and stiff areas. Calcium compounds can also build up in these areas, to make the plaques even harder.

The areas with this plaque build up end up having fewer effective blood vessels because of it, as the penis fills with blood and the penis begins to attain an erection, the penis expands differently on either sides, this makes the penis to curve towards the side where the plaque is most prominent.

Peyronies disease can affect anyone, but is usually more prevalent in men as they approach 50
.
There are a several main characteristics of Peyronies Disease:

- Small hard lumps can be felt underneath the skin, or possibly a continuous hard, stiff and thickened area can be felt along one side of the penis.

- Bending of the penis when erect. Most penises curve slightly as they go erect, but with this disease present, the bend can cause a very pronounced curved in the penis

-The curve will usually form towards the same side as the harder or thickened area of skin.

-These areas in the erected penis may look like bumps.

- In severe cases the penis can bend to such a degree that it makes sexual intercourse difficult, or plainly impossible.

- Painful erections are common; these are caused by the pressure from the hard areas in the penis, or the fact that the skin is stretched at the opposite side of the penis.

- Peyronies can appear gradually the curve will gradually worsen as the disease takes hold.

- Sometimes Peyronies can clear up by itself, but this may take several years. There are also several effective methods of curing or easing the condition.

The Causes of Peyronies Disease

The exact cause of curvature is not really apparent. It does not indicate any links to other serious conditions, and it is most certainly not a sexually transmitted infection. Medical experts feel that it is more likely to begin with an inflammation in the penile tissue. Possibly an allergic reaction. Peyronies disease is not actually an infection; an initial infection in the penis can damage the internal tissue which could then develop into Peyronies disease.

Treating Peyronies Disease

Less severe cases of Peyronies disease do not require treatment. The condition can sometimes go away by itself, taking time to disperse. With severe problems, there are a number of methods that can take remove the symptoms of Peyronies Disease.

They Include:

Surgery - This is sometimes considered if this disease has lasted for a year or more and it has not changed for at least three months. Using a method called the Nesbitt procedure the surgeon will remove tissue opposite to the curve to straighten the penis.
Another method of surgery involves putting a graft or part of a vein into the area that has the fibrous plaque to lengthen this area. In certain cases of this disease, the surgical insertion of a special prosthesis (implant) is recommended.

Penis Exercises - There are some very useful and effective courses of specially devised exercises that can help straighten (and often enlarge) the penis.

Penis Exercises

Penis Traction devices - There are many good and effective medically approved mechanical devices that are worn on the penis that gently apply a stretching pressure to the penile tissue to straighten out the penis to cure the curvature caused by Peyronies disease. This is probably the most effective way to cure penile curvature..
