On-page optimization means optimizing each page for specific keyword. This means emphasizing the keywords in order to tell search engines what the pages are about. Emphasizing the keyword does not mean to repeat it many times. It means creating user friendly pages. If the visitor will be able to quickly determine the page content and will be able to easily read it in order to learn something new or useful then the first step of on-page SEO is already done.
The second step is to add elements that help search engines to properly understand the website content. Since search engines see our website slightly different you have to add few invisible elements like meta tags and to slightly modify existing page elements. The target keyword should be present in the page title and header tags. If you have created a webpage for human visitor then this is probably already done.
Off-page optimization means creating backlinks to your page. Each backlink counts and contributes to its popularity and reputation. There are many places where you can get a link: blogs, forums, directories, Web 2.0 sites, etc. Blogs and forums are places where people discuss popular topics This is where you can promote your website. But don't just spam with unrelated posts just to publish your link. Try to contribute to the discussion, provide some useful content, answer a question, offer help and advise other users. There are many ways how you can use blogs and forums for successful promotion of your website.
Maybe the most important SEO element is the content itself. Do not copy text from other websites. Duplicate content is easily discovered and penalized. Pages with poor content never reach top positions. Make sure you have unique and quality content. Try to write about the subject with your own words.
