Search engine optimization is not as simple as it once was. It used to be a case of doing whatever you could to fool search engines into liking your site; however, you have to be more careful what you do now, and the chances are that if your site is not genuinely qualified to be at the top for a given search term, then it won\'t ever get there, no matter what you do.

As little as ten years ago, search engine optimization was nothing more than a concept that could be beneficial if search engines (SEs) proved popular enough, known about by only a certain few. In the years that followed, Google was to dominate not only the search engine market, but the Internet itself.

There are well over a billion internet users world-wide and most of them would go straight to Google if ever they were looking for a particular product or service, and so, it is only natural that the providers of any given product or service, would want to appear at the top of a Google results search so that they get the vast share of the online market.

Thus, a whole new industry was born. Search engine optimization or SEO is, in layman's terms, doing whatever needs to be done in order to get a website to appear at the top of a search engine results page or SERP. However, where it may have been that simple once upon a time, it is now a hugely competitive industry and a must for anyone who hopes to even get noticed in the online world.

Not only this, but there are practices that SEs disapprove of known as "black hat" practices. These practices basically consist of anything that you can sit down and do to your site over and over again to make it look more knowledgeable. For example, piling up lots and lots of keywords on each page so that SEs will see all these keywords and rank your pages highly because it sees those keywords so much. This may have worked for a brief period years ago, but no longer. If you use these kind of tactics you're likely to get your site blacklisted by Google and have to start all over again.

Engines like Google want to see natural, organic site growth, and natural links being put on lots of other sites, pointing at yours. However, to achieve this naturally, i.e. not just piling loads of links up on whatever sites you can yourself, takes lots of time and so unless you have lots of patience, a good knowledge of how search engines read sites (this also takes quite a while to fully understand) and the commitment to keep up with every little change that Google makes (which can be quite stressful as they are very secretive!) then I highly recommend outsourcing your SEO work to a company that knows what they're doing and that will show you the results you want.
