If you're like most business owners marketing online, you rely pretty heavily on your website to draw in traffic and drive sales. Your site is, in fact, the place where it all happens. Ultimately, it's where you want your target market to end up.

So, the question becomes, how do you not only get people to your site but keep them there? A site that is able to retain visitors is called "sticky". This should be your goal. Have you ever seen interesting content that links to a site that offers no useful information, no clear call to action and is difficult to navigate on top of it? Did you leave and never go back?

In the brave new world of content marketing, it's important to realize that your website content is the foundation of your online presence, and your success. It can't be slapped together, it can't be salesy, it can't focus on your thoughts, opinions or feelings. It must be customer-oriented. Here are some tips for creating great website content:

1. Plan it out- Before you put anything out there for your customers to see, look into what their most pressing concerns and problems are. The keywords they use to find you offer clues, so use a keyword research tool to find the best ones. Do an online survey, or see what other companies in your field are doing with their sites.

2. Determine your goals- What do you want your content to achieve? Do you want to reach a specific sales number? Do you want more unique visitors to your site each month? Knowing what your goals are for both the long and short term will help you pick the content products that are right for you.

3. Choose content products- A content product is essentially a vehicle for your content. Here are a few examples of commonly used content products:
· Blogs
· Articles
· White papers
· Videos
· Email newsletters
· Ebooks
· Social media posts

Each of these offers a way for you to get your content widely distributed and linked back to your site.

4. Engage your reader- This may be the most important tip for anyone doing content marketing. Your website content needs to grab readers, and the best way to do this is by making it interesting and relevant to them. Tie your content into your keywords, so that the search engines can index your pages properly, but remember that it's the quality of the content that ultimately attracts people and gets them to pass it around.

5. Stay on top of it- Fresh content scores points with both readers and search engines. Be sure to constantly update your content. Post a new blog at least once or twice a week. Send out an email newsletter on a regular schedule. Constantly creating high quality content not only establishes your authority, it makes buyers think of you when it comes time to purchase.

Great website content doesn't just happen. It takes time and effort. But, the payoff in increased leads and sales makes it all worth it.
