Before you do anything, plan what you want. Will you be selling anything online? Will you be capturing any data online like name or email?

1. Before you do anything, plan what you want. Will you be selling anything online? Will you be capturing any data online like name or email? Is it just a brochure website? Try and get an idea of what you want it to look like - stuck for ideas then surf the web until you find a website that you quite like and do something similar.

2. Have an idea of what text you want on the website and if possible key in into a word document to check the spelling. That way you can be sure it all looks good. There is nothing worse than typos on a website it makes it look very unprofessional.

3. You will need a domain name - this is the fun bit. Some people will choose the domain name based on their content - others will choose the domain name based on their brand - both are good but you must decide which one you want to use. The domain name must of course be available for you to buy.

4. You will need some web space. You can get FREE web space but usually this comes at a price, for example on a lot of free web space random ads appear. Also the company/person controlling the web space will usually allocate you a long and weird domain name. If it is a trial/test web site then it is a good idea to use free web space, however if it is for your business I would strongly suggest that you buy some web space. How much will it cost? Costs vary from a few dollars a month ($5) upwards. With some companies you are asked to pay upfront for a whole year.

5. When building your website you will need some "web authoring software". There are many packages available to buy like "Dreamweaver" or go for a free one - in my Free Ebook you can find details of where to find this and how it works.

6. A software package to load the web pages to the internet commonly called FTP (file transfer protocol). Again the best packages are the ones you pay for but again you can get some pretty good free ones.

It has never been easier to build your own website. Do you need to understand all the technical stuff? Well you do not need to be an expert but it is easier if you have a little understanding how it hangs together. Do not despair I struggled with all this once and I have now put it all together in one place, all the information you need is included.
