From mere 2D animated intros with flying objects to powering complete desktop applications, Flash has evolved big time. It is taking the world over by becoming an authoritative and comprehensive web development platform. Boosted with Actionscript 3.0 programming, Flash is fast changing the face of web with rich internet applications that promise greater attractive appeal and interactivity.
From Futurewave to Macromedia and now Adobe, Flash has had three owners in its 13 years of existence. Over the years, each latest version of Flash has brought additional new features, animation tools, programming interfaces and ready-to-use components that help designers come up with extravagant internet applications.
Internet-based Web Applications:
The earliest use of Flash was to develop simple animation tools with a plug-in that was compatible with prevailing browsers like IE and Netscape. A timeline was used to control the entry & exit, movement and rotation of vector graphics placed on a single layer, which were later compiled to form a simple movie clip. The scope of interactivity and compelling design was minimal.
Compared to primordial version, the Flash Professional of CS4 suite incorporates highly advanced features that empower designers and developers with:
1. Object based animation
2. Defining key frames used to handle automatic tweening of animation
3. Automatically generated motion path
4. Motion editor with easy-to-use tools for greater granular control over attributes and many others
There are no time-based animations as Actionscript can control their movements or users can trigger the action themselves. This interactivity feature makes Flash as one of the most popular platforms for casual games, online shopping portals, simulation based sites, virtual online tour sites etc. In addition, open content integration without affecting file integrity from other Adobe softwares like InDesign, Aftereffects make Flash a potent platform to create rich internet applications.
Adobe Flash is facing a stiff challenge from its rival Silverlight, Microsoft's product. Adobe is planning to launch Adobe Flash CS5 Professional (Ver. 11) in April 2010. Codenamed 'Viper', this version is proposed to contain enhanced text formatting, extensible Deco tool, XML based FLA files Code Snippets panel, Flash Builder integration, improved ActionScript editor and much awaited Packager for iPhone tailor made to run Flash applications in iPhone. So, there will be much more to Flash than ever anticipated and designers and developers will only relish working on it.
