These days, website development and website design have become a huge part of any successful internet e-commerce venture or even any casual site that wants to generate a fair amount of traffic. It is not enough to have creative, interesting original content; in order for people to take you seriously or spend any time at all with your content, the packaging must be equally attractive. This can seem daunting or something only a professional could pull off successfully, but in reality website design usually follows a few simple rules that can help to guide even a beginner through making a site that is clean, functional, and beautiful. This article will discuss some of the main points every web designer should know and follow to achieve success.

The first thing you should remember is that as a web designer, any visitor to the site is putty in your hands. What they look at, what their eyes are drawn to, is totally within your control. So if you are marketing a product, or trying to convey important information, it is your job to make that information pop out. There are a variety of different ways to do this, but for a skilled designer, the end result is that the viewer of the website only looks where the designer wants them to look; their entire focus throughout the viewing experience is guided by the visual cues the designer has implanted in the site.

Next, we will go through some of the strategies and tools available to the web designer to achieve this effect. Perhaps the most obvious ones are position and sizing. What the viewer first sees on the page is incredibly influential to symbolize what the site is about, and should not only be eye-catching but continue the viewer's eye down the page to the next most important element. Playing around with the order of different elements on the site and their positioning is an extremely basic first step but an important one. Along the same lines, the sizing of different elements may make them stand out more or less depending on their relationship to other objects.

Two other extremely important design elements are color and contrast. For those who have already played around with sizing and positioning, using different colors to outline objects or highlight text may be extremely effective ways of drawing viewer attention. In the same way, contrast can be a simple but more subtle way of achieving the same result. The key with these two methods is subtlety; high contrasts and bright colors will surely attract attention but may also run the risk of looking tacky. It is more advisable to use bold colors or a rich color tone - it does not necessarily have to be bright to stand out, and it is important when using a color scheme to choose complementary colors than stand-out colors. When using contrast as a design technique, make sure that everything is still clearly visible. If something stands out, it becomes a primary element, but this doesn't mean that the secondary elements should be hard to read or identify.
