As an Interactive Arts & Media graduate I understand the importance of Adobe Flash and at the same time its fundamental advantages and disadvantages. With a flash site you can make a boring static page come alive. The flexibility you have with Flash is quite remarkable once you get down to it. It can make any ordinary site look professional if implemented correctly. It provides the capability to turn a site from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional. It can add enough excitement to keep visitors interested, and it is capable of making a site look and feel fancy. However nothing is perfect, and because of that philosophy there are flaws that are difficult to overcome.
One well known and terrible flaw is the connection between Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy and Flash web design. Google still has not come up with a way to list flash sites. It can list a.SWF, but since it cannot read any of the content on a flash site, there is almost no way of it getting very far on search engine result pages (SERPS), unless you go all out with link building and even that is an uphill battle.
Loading screens are an additional problem. If someone is visiting a flash site with a slow or optimal connection, the time it takes to load that page may not be worth it anymore. Expect a quick click on the back button. Most people working with flash understand that size matters and will do what they can to keep the size of their flash site at a minimum.
Now with new mobile technology, flash sites are inaccessible. This problem can obviously be overcome by making a mobile version of your site.
These flaws, as troublesome as they are, can be manageable. Sites that are geared directly as portfolios, personal, or informative websites can use flash as typically their traffic is generated from word of mouth or linked from other sites. If you're trying to drive visitors to your site by search engine, Flash can become problematic.
The best solution from preventing your flash web site from hitting a wall is by compromising with both a static and flash site. This means make your site part flash and part static. It is highly recommended you try and keep your navigation free from flash. The reason for this is because you want to keep that SEO strategy alive just in case you ever decide to take that route. What is a great idea is use it for various features of your site. You could use flash for banners, headers, footers, image rotators and so on. Just try to avoid using it for navigation and anything that has a lot of content. Making a site that is part flash and part static can be quite beneficial
Flash web design is becoming more and more popular each year. Flash is a remarkable and powerful tool, and it recommended that you understand the variables, the pros and cons before jumping into it.
