Here is a query I received from a concerned new business owner:
I have two galleries / shops. People say they love my work and images, but my sales are slow. I would love your opinion on this as I am pretty broke right now and might have zero access to the internet in the near future and do not have much time left to make money online.
I checked out her site. The first thing I noticed was that there was no real indication that things were for sale. There were lots of banners and adverts which were confusing for the visitor and can create a bad impression. Visitors need to be told what to expect - a "for sale" notice or some other way of attracting their attention. Simply placing a lot of adverts on a website will be a turn off for most people. Make it explicit what it is that the web page is delivering - if it's sales, then say so.
The main problem, however, was likely be traffic. How many visitors come to the site and where do they come from? You need to know that before you can progress any further because no (or few) visitors means no sales. I would recommend the installation of Google Analytics onto the site to start tracking the visitors and where they have come from. Then the site owner will be able to tighten up the visitor experience as well as increasing unique visitors to the site.
