There are five general steps in the website building process. The first step is to plan the website; the second step is to choose the domain name; choose the webhost for the third, then build the website and finally, upload the website to the internet. The first two are the easiest to do because it could be a fun process. However, they are also the most important steps. Planning the website and choosing the right domain name are the fundamental steps. If not done properly, these two steps could make the whole process of running the website difficult for the owner. Here, we will tackle only the planning. In the course of planning, a list of ideas about what the website must do should be drawn up. The list should include every trivial thing that the web owner envisions for the website.

Planning the website includes planning the design and the concept of the website. Everything about the website building process should fall in place once the plans are drawn and followed. In making the plan, every little thing about the site should be considered - from the concept and visual ambience (which should attract the type intended viewers) to the demographic group that the website is being designed for.

The planning stage is about colors, fonts, energy and function. In planning the design and layout, it is best to make a sketch of how the website should look. The focus in this stage is the visual impact for intended market demographic. Concept plays an important role in the design process. A website for tracing the family lineage, for example, will have a very different design layout from one that is going to be used as a virtual office. A virtual office for a lawyer or doctor will also have a different look from one that will sell wedding or party favors. In this stage, background and font colors have to be carefully chosen. The right balance between visual impact and respectability has to be achieved. There are websites that put emphasis on visual impact over function. They have silver, gold and sometimes black pages with blue or red font colors in them. But because the designers did not think that readability was as important as visual impact, the website is treated only as an oddity. Most visitors don't go past the home pages and those that go on do so for the wrong reason.

Function plays an important role in websites too, since visitors prefer user-friendly websites where everything is labeled properly and easy to use. Websites where site navigation buttons are difficult to find turn off many visitors. Web designers sometimes emphasize buttons that make money over those that provide information. Again, this will depend on what is important to the owner of the website.

There are also websites that take forever to load on the screen. These websites may cause the viewer to turn elsewhere. Some web designers">web designers recommend using scroll buttons for site navigation so that several option are revealed instead of making the customer load page after page in search of the right information. Pictures could slow down the page loading process, and although the pictures could help make a sale, too many pictures on a webpage will turn away customers who cannot wait for the page to load. If pictures are a necessity, they have to be converted into smaller low definition images to make the webpage load faster.

As one can see, there are many things to consider in planning a website. It is almost like making a work of fine art because everything will depend on the planner's attention to detail. Nevertheless, once it is done, the website building process becomes easier and less time-consuming.
