Remember when you told your web guy that your website was slow to come up on the screen and he told you not to worry about it? Guess what -
The tortoise-like load time on your website is now officially an issue!
See, in the past, Google ranked pages according to the relevancy of the information found in the text of the page...and how many other people felt that the text was relevant by linking to it.
But today, Google announced that the load-time of a page would also affect its ranking.
Why? Because people won't visit a site that takes forever to load.
Think about the last time you sat for more than 10 seconds waiting on a page. That 10 seconds seemed like forever! You very quickly got frustrated and either found another page or tried repeatedly to refresh said slow-loading-page and THEN found another site that would give you the same information.
I think this is a GREAT move on Google's part.
Wanna know why?
Guess who's the Sandra Bullock of the internet world? The can-do-no-wrong sweetheart of search engines? The fastest-loading websites ever?
WordPress.:)
And guess who designs these "fast-loading kiss-up sites to Google"?
Me.:)
And guess how fast you can have your own, custom WordPress design?
Some in as little as 24hours.:)
So what can you do to make your pages load faster?
The obvious first step is to use WordPress as the base for your website. It loads fast, is easy to optimize for search engines, and is even easier to update and use (I can show you how to load it up and use it).
Step 2: Keep your background pictures to a MINIMUM SIZE. Holy cow, the rest of your site should not be up for a half an hour before your background loads up! Huge pictures equal long load time.
Step 3: Shrink your videos. Not in length - in size. Most of the time, when you're publishing a video for the web, you get to choose how to save it. Most choices are HD, "regular" TV, or for media device. Guess which one I choose and I rarely see degradation of quality. Besides, unless you're selling video editing software, no one's gonna say, "Gosh, I would have bought from him, but his video was just a tad grainy."
Imagine, these 3 little steps can now get you a higher page ranking in Google!
So now its your turn. Speed costs money. How fast do you wanna go?
