The market is becoming more and more competitive every day for small business owners as they struggle through the recession. Consumers are now harder and tighter with their cash than ever before because they are also feeling the pressure of the credit crunch. Studies have shown that more potential customers than ever before are now turning to the internet to find the perfect deal.

How are businesses changing?

Many businesses are now aware of this. They are beginning to list their businesses in as many online directories as they can to try and increase their exposure online. This means that when a potential client is searching on websites such as yell.com for a restaurant in their local area, their business will be visible. This does help to increase exposure to a wider market by making sure that the business can be found, however this is only the first hurdle. If there are 20 restaurants that come up in a local search and only 5 of them have a website, it will be those 5 restaurants that will receive the most exposure.

All customers like to know what a restaurant looks like and what is available on the menu before they choose to book. If the restaurant has a website, it has an online brochure with pictures of the restaurant, an online menu and a booking system. This means it will be far more likely to be picked by the customer over the restaurants that only have phone numbers and textual information listed.

Why so many businesses don't have websites?

Price is a large concern when it comes to building a website; Many web designers">web designers push up the prices as more features, pages and functionality are incorporated into the website during the building process. However there are some very good web design companies that have fixed prices and don't do this.

Many businesses don't think that a website can help them; Plumbers are a good example of this, they rarely have a website unless they are a large company because they believe they have never needed a website in the past. A website however can still help these businesses in many ways. If a potential client is working his way through plumber listings online or in a newspaper, they will be more interested in hiring the plumber they can find the most information on. If a plumber has a website listed in his adverts, once the potential customer has found him they will be able to visit the website and view pictures of previous work, read customer testimonials and even put a face to the name. The plumber can also refer potential clients to the website in their answer phone message, so it reduces the odds of a customer moving on to the next number in the list.

Another large concern to many businesses is the fear of hiring a web designer cowboy. Sometimes a freelance web designer could build your website but fail to maintain and update it, or they could have a sudden change of career and disappear. However there are some large web design companies that can eliminate all of these concerns.

Lack of understanding is often another reason some companies don't have websites. They believe they won't understand the technical details in setting up a website, or they wouldn't be able to make effective use of it once it is finished. The internet is now safer and easier to use than it has ever been before and anyone can be shown how to send an email or print off booking forms.
