Adding an icon that shows up next to your web address in the URL box will take about 10 minutes, and it gives your site a branded appeal in bookmark listings and RSS feeds. Google\'s got one. So does the New York Times. Now it\'s your turn.

Looking for a simple way to make your WordPress-based website more professional looking?

Adding an icon that shows up next to your web address in the URL box will take about 10 minutes, and it gives your site a branded appeal in bookmark listings and RSS feeds. Google's got one. So does the New York Times. Now it's your turn.

Step 1: Open your favorite graphics editing program and create a 50×50 pixel icon. This can be a completely new image or it can be borrowed from your existing logo. Just be sure it's simple and easily viewable because it will ultimately be a tiny square of an image. If you don't have graphics software like Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks, you can download a free, but powerful, program called Gimp at gimp.org. If you're too dang lazy to create an icon, or you're not versed enough in graphics to, no worries. You can simply borrow your Twitter icon (see step 2).

Step 2: Upload your newly created icon to http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/. If you don't have an icon, you can enter your Twitter username and pilfer your account's already-created icon. Download the "favicon".

Step 3: Open the folder you just downloaded and locate the.ico file. Using an FTP client, upload the.ico file to the /wp-content/themes/yourthemefilename directory.

Step 4: Login to your WordPress admin and go to Appearance >> Editor. On the right sidebar, click "header.php".

Step 5: Add the following html code on the line just before:

<link rel="shortcut icon" rel='nofollow' href="wp-content/themes/yourthemefilename/favicon.ico" type="image/ico" />

Of course, be sure to change "yourthemefilename" to your actual theme's filename (and be careful, it's case sensitive).

Step 6: Scope out your site. Do you see the new snazzy icon? If not, try hitting Ctrl + F5 to clear your cache and reload the page.

Step 7: Brag to your friends and family about your pro-looking site. You're big time now.
