Professional Design
Having your website professionally designed is fine but it can be expensive. For example I recently saw a sign in a shop advertising a website designed for £900 basic price and for someone just starting it is simply not necessary to pay that kind of money. Bells and Whistles
This is what I call all the things which appear on professionally designed websites which I suggest are neither necessary nor even desirable for someone new to Internet Marketing. Examples are music, flash, loads of pictures, animated cartoon characters etc.
It is very easy to get caught up in trying to include all the latest things which can take an enormous amount of time and lead you into problems which are difficult to overcome and often leads to complete failure.
Video presentations
These can be a very powerful tool in persuading your customers to sign up for your free gift or to press the buy now button, but they are not easy to produce and not everyone is comfortable in sitting in front of a camera and persuading complete strangers to buy their product. It also helps if you are young and good looking. I wish! Here again I would suggest that they are simply not necessary for your first website.
Navigation.
This a very important thing to think about. How many times do you visit a website and find you are interested in buying a product but you can't find the buy now button. I am constantly surprised that some obviously professionally designed websites make it very difficult to find your way around the site.
You particularly need to make your buy now buttons and opt-in boxes very clear, for obvious reasons, and make sure that your links to other areas actually work. Your visitors need to find their way around easily and to quickly find their way back to the home page.
Images
By all means use images to make your site look attractive but here again don't overdo this. Too many images can distract the visitor. Don't forget that if you haven't caught the visitor's attention within about 10 seconds you have probably lost them for good.
Content
Take care with the content of your site. Ask yourself what information you would be looking for at your website and make sure you provide it. Also make sure that any other information you provide is absolutely relevent.
