I personally think that one of the key elements of a graphic design project success is good cooperation with clients. I'm a web designer with seven years experience in a web design and graphic design business. There are difficult clients with very bad habits but if we are smart and well-prepared we can come up with an effective way of managing even the hardest clients. Working with any client can be constructive and lead straight to project completion. To achieve this you have to be able to collect all the details you need from the customer. Sometimes it's easier said than done. It is unbelievable but some companies do not have a clear idea of what they really want or need and still press on signing a contract. How to get the information you cannot do without to estimate the project costs and complete the job? The devil lies in asking the right questions. Well-organized queries will not only help you get a good understanding of client's expectations but also support client himself in clarifying his own needs.

No matter what your potential customer requires, it will be developed with specific visitors in mind. So the crucial issue is the audience that a design is supposed to target. The type of audience affects every aspect of the design project - the form, style, content, and message. What factors should be taken into account in defining the target group? You may consider a wide variety here, but probably the most common are: age, sex, marital status, geo location, economic conditions, etc. Now, you need to be absolutely certain about the message a client wants to convey to targeted visitors. Once you know what your design will be communicating, you have to find out what mood it is planned to strike - happy, grave, sympathetic, etc. Try to get a couple of key phrases from a client that best describe the message and the goal. They will assist you in defining the style of a graphic design.

Next thing to ask for is a design project specification. It is extremely useful in estimating the costs and time needed to finish the job. It happens quite often that a customer is not sure what precisely he is searching for. It is a perfect moment to make things clear - help the client out with some advice and useful proposals. Gather such information as how much is to be shown, what the budget is, etc. Sometimes clients are not aware of graphic design costs and simply cannot set a project budget. Others will wait for you to disclose total design work pricing first. No matter who you are dealing with, ask the investment they are planning to make. Remember you are not obliged to take up a job for whatever the customer is willing to pay and work below your costs. What you can do to fall closer within the client project resources is to change a few specifications. Be honest to your potential customer but be also fair to yourself.

Inquire clients about their preferences such as colors or fonts. Being a web designer myself I can tell you many clients have some favorite websites, artworks or other graphic creation and would like you to follow similar creative route. Your own web design will be original but still it is very useful to find out what the client's preferred graphic direction is. Of course you have to gather from the client such materials as existing color schemes, logos, brand and typeface. This is especially the case with corporations that have fixed design standards in force. And finally learn when the client needs the project to be finished. If the expected completion date is very hard to meet, warn the client that there would be a time-pressure fee to complete the project in time. It is vital to go over all the changeable before you accept the job, quote the price and sign the contract.
