When designing a website, most people don't take into consideration if their web pages are search engine friendly. Failing to build websites that are not easily crawled by the search engines can lead to many problems: your site may not get indexed, you will lose rankings etc...

Here are 5 easy fixes that will make sure your web pages are easily accessed by the search engines:

1. Do not use frames. Web pages that are designed using frames do not perform very well due to the fact that the search engines index the actual html frame coding and not the page inside the frame (the page inside the frame should be indexed; this is where all the content is placed). In order to find out if your website is using frames, you need to look at the source code. Here's how to do it: load your web page in your favorite browser, right click anywhere on the page and select "View Source" or "View Page Source". If you find the frameset and frame html tags in the source code it means your website is using frames.

2. Do not use Flash. Flash is a programming language used to create web animations. We've all seen those fancy movies with a small "Skip intro" link. It is strongly recommended to remove all flash elements. Not only they are not useful and may annoy your visitors, but Flash content cannot be crawled by the search engines spiders.

3. Remove media. Videos and audio files cannot be crawled and indexed by the search engines Do not use these type of files unless they really serve a purpose.

4. Remove images. If your website contains a lot of images, consider replacing most of your them with text because search engines cannot read images. If for some reason you are not able to remove an image, make sure you use the "alt" tag which stands for "alternative text". The tag is used to describe the picture for the visually impaired but it is also used by the search engines.

5. Text should outweigh HTML. Make sure that you have more text than you do HMTL coding. Load your web page in your favorite browser, right click anywhere on the page and select "View Source" or "View Page Source". Look at the source code and decide whether or not you need to add more text.

A nice looking website with a lot of pictures and fancy Flash movies will not guarantee good rankings. Instead, keep it as simple as possible and use as much keyword rich text as you can.
