So it's the start of a new year, your trusty site has done you proud over the festive season, it may have creaked under the strain of your over-enthusiastic customers, but it's made it through - all that hard work was worth it.
So you've probably logged into your site after the holidays, maybe disabled the Christmas theme, and are left looking at the standard design. Your once cutting-edge design might suddenly, without you looking, become a little behind the times. So what are the options? Well you could leave it a bit longer, hoping that no one else notices that your e-commerce site is featuring the design equivalent of a well thumbed book. Or you can decide to knuckle down and start working on a new-years-new-design.
So where to start? Well this really depends on how your site is currently setup, for the unfortunate you may have to completely re-work the site in order to give it the required spring clean. For the fortunate it may just be a re-skinning that is required (the equivalent of a digital nip-and-tuck).
Throughout this process you should be bearing in mind the strengths, qualities, brand ideals, and any other details that your company that you hold dear. All these components need, in some way, to be represented by the new design. Also keep in mind the quality of any competitor websites, you may well find that spending extra money at this stage can help you win over customers at a later date - never skimp on good design!
At this point you may decide that the services of a web design company are required, after all, the work or redesigning the interface of your site is not an afternoons job! You need to properly convey to your designers what you want the design to 'say' about your company. Any of those ideals and qualities we discussed earlier should be expressed in any conversations and design consultations you have with your designer. One tip is to research some other sites that you like the look of, or perhaps like part of the functionality or design. All this information helps your designer understand the 'look' you are imagining - any time spent ironing out any misunderstandings and clarifications can pay dividends in time and money in the future.
When the basic design is being completed remember to consider how the site will need to function, for example does the site need to allow ecommerce transactions through payment gateways, and will this require cooperation with a payment service provider?
With your new website complete its time to sit back and admire all your hard work. Your new image not only gives your site that refreshing new look, but also subtly conveys the message that your business is 'current' and doesn't rest on its laurels. Take a few moments to bask in the glow of your stunning new design, not too long though, is that the New Year I can see on the horizon?
