To create a website from scratch you need a domain, web hosting and a simple content management system. In theory, all the required steps are very simple.

There are only few simple steps from the idea to the live and operating website. In general it is not a good idea to hurry with page design and domain registration. Domain name should be properly chosen and because most words or word phrases are already registered, this will be a difficult task. Page design is also very important. It should provide easy navigation and reflect the basic message of the website. However, if you are determined to create a website from scratch then you should go through the following steps.

Domain
This is the name in the web space. If you will have a general website then you need to register it under general purpose top level domains like com, org, net or info. If you will have pages in native language then you can go for a country domains like at, de, nl, it, etc. Registration is a fast and simple process. You go to a registrar (google for "domain registration"), create an account, log in and proceed to registration. Enter desired name and if it is not registered yet simply proceed to the checkout where you can pay online and the domain will be yours. If it is already registered then you will have to find a new name or different "extension". Start with com and if it is not available there then try with org or net.

Hosting
Once you have the domain you need web hosting to store and serve web pages. Many registrars offer also hosting and many hosting companies offer also domains. Usually this combined deal will not be the cheapest but will definitely be the fastest way to create a live website. Once you create an account you will get the IP address of your web server and access to the control panel. If you have chosen a different company for domain registration then log in to control panel and create a DNS A record with hosting IP address. This will link your domain with the web server. The propagation of this data may take some time, even day or two. To access your web page before the DNS data is propagated through the web you can add a line in your hosts file. Google for "hosts file" to find out how to do it.

Content Management System
Now you have everything needed to create your first web page. It can be a simple HTML file, but a much better choice would be to use some CMS like Joomla. It is free, easy to install and easy to use. Go to Joomla website and download the latest version. Upload it to your web server and unpack the archive file. This can be done with the file manager at the hosting control panel or with some additional script. You can also unpack it locally and upload individual files. Before you start the installation you need to create one MySQL database. Go to hosting control panel and create one database. Remember database name, user name and password. Now you can start the Joomla installation. Simply enter your domain into web browser and you should get Joomla installation page. Follow the steps and enter database data when requested. At the end you should have a live website. Now you create some pages about your brilliant idea.

Of course, in reality these steps are much slower. Before you start with any website you should do some preparation. You should find a suitable domain name that is not registered yet. Then you need to find a cheap registrar and a cheap and reliable hosting. This also takes some time. Once you have domain and hosting you can start exploring the world of Joomla or any other CMS. If your website will be a blog then you will probably use Wordpress. Anyway, in theory all the steps are very simple. In practice, the whole process takes a lot of time.
