Building a great website is fairly easy when you keep in mind that simple is good. Only add things that benefit the user, whether that is you or someone else. When designing your website keep it simple, clean, and professional looking. Avoid "fun" java script, flash, or widgets that don't have a use except for looking cool.
Remember that the more information, scripts, images, etc. you try to include on a particular web page it will increase in file size which will in turn slow loading times. Remember there are still a lot of people using dial-up connections. When building your webpage you should try to keep your file size between 60kb and 90kb. Some may argue that 90kb is too high but as a general rule it should work fine for most website visitors.
Spice up your website using images, however don't over do it because images can break the bank on file size if over used or misused. People like to look at pictures so use images that reflect insight on the content you are displaying to visitors. Speaking of content, it is critical to use unique and useful content. Content that gives the visitor what they are looking for or at least answers some of their questions while providing an avenue to continue their search for information.
Navigation should also be taken seriously when building a website. Use easy to follow descriptive anchor text for your navigation. You want visitors to be able to quickly find what they are looking for and even find their way back to where they were.
Building a great website is fairly easy if you don't over do it and complicate it with things that you don't need. Understand your target audience and serve their needs. Avoid doing things "just because" and make sure what is being provided satisfies a need.
