Computers really have become ubiquitous in the Twenty-first century. It is hard to go anywhere within any city without encountering them at the local grocery store, restaurant, or movie theater. We carry them in our pockets even though we call those gadgets "smart" phones. It seems as if we might be awash in computer-driven technology. Well, that is until you need computers - but only for a short duration. Sure one could go out and blow even the most generous of budgets on computers and their associated peripherals, but why would anyone do something like that for a short-term job? In steps a niche technology supplier - computer rental.

Who could possibly want to rent a computer? Obviously, anyone who lacks the budget to purchase a computer that might be used intermittently or, worse, only once. A very good example would be an organization hosting a convention. Registration and sign in are very tedious, document-heavy tasks which computers can make much easier. Instead of having someone fumbling through printouts and then having to look to see if someone has paid and then having to look though a box with pre-printed name tags, an attendee could just walk up and have their information available on one screen and their badge could be printed up on the spot. Quick, easy, and painless.

Granted, conventions are a niche as well so where else could computer rental be utilized? What immediately comes to mind is any setting where mass data handling needs to be accomplished. Often, this occurs where there are large numbers of people needing assistance. As unfortunate as disasters and accident are, sometimes the information that is needed can not be processed quickly enough to effect positive results. Just look at the fiasco with Hurricane Katrina. In the even of such a horrible event, organizations could utilize computer rental to everyone's benefit by having computers in the field - where they are needed.

"What about the average business?" you may ask. "I am just a small business owner. Why would I need to consider computer rental?" Good question and here is why: You should be backing up your data regularly and off site. Obviously, this is done to offset the potential of some catastrophic failure of your computer or its hard drive. What would you do if all your computers failed at the same time? Outlandish? Not really. There is a one word answer "fire". If there was to be a fire in your business, fire, smoke, and water damage will probably destroy your computers. If you have been smart and backed up, you will have your data but no computers to use it on until the insurance covers the replacements. What do you do in the meantime? Computer rental.

It should be said that a rental computer should be considered a public computer. As a result, you would want to be very careful with proprietary and private information. There are various means for going about this correctly from the consumer's side of the equation. When looking for a company from which to rent a computer, discuss data security with them and ask what they can do and what they recommend you do to ensure everything is a secure as possible.

While not quite as visible as car rental, computer rental is a viable tool available to any business or person. If the situation ever arises where a computing platform is only needed on a short-term basis, do your homework and look around before you commit to purchasing anything outright. You can save a good deal of cash and that is always a good thing.
