During a recession, tightening our belts on unnecessary costs is essential to a business\'s long-term survival. There are many ways to do this beyond the scope of this article.

The average small to medium size business houses between 5 and 10 PCs. These PC pre-dominantly use Windows XP/Vista and are either stand alone units or use a Small business server to manage the users and backup the data. Without a doubt a service agreement of sorts should be in place to maintain the small business server or main file server, as logically this is where the mission critical data will be held day-to-day and needs physically checking regularly to make sure that services and backup routines are running without fault.

But -and this is a big BUT, why are businesses paying between £50-100 per PC per month for PC support when the majority of the PC support issues during the day to day running of the business are related to user problems? Questions like "why wont this spreadsheet work," "I cant access this file," I cant get the computer to login", "I think I have a virus!"

These are all issue's that could be addressed by a Web based or telephone based PC support contract whereby the technician securely logs into the PC and fixes it remotely. So. Why would you bother with one of these? Well, such contracts not only cost significantly less which will greatly help your margins, but they will also free up the poor guy who's always moaning about not getting anything done due to people constantly asking for IT help!

Average cost comparison

5 PCs Support (not including server) average support contract - £300 per month plus VAT

5 PCs Web Support (not including server) average support contract - £20 per month plus VAT

Saving of £180 + VAT per month

These costs are taken from remote PC support figures quoted on: www.pc-helpdesk.co.uk

Conclusion

Save your business a lots of money by removing your desktop PC's from your IT support contract and have them covered by a remote support contract. I hope this article helps your business save money during these tough times!
