When the event date arrives, you will receive a reminder in your Gmail ID in advance and you will get alert when you check your inbox. You can even receive alerts in your mobile as a text message. All you have to do is, go to the settings page of your account and edit in the "mobile set up" category. Once you enter your mobile number there, you will receive a verification code as a text message in the mentioned number. You need to confirm with that code by entering the same in the setting page. After the code has been verified, your mobile number is activated and you will receive reminder alerts in your mobile.

It is possible to view your Google calendar in read-only version even when you are in offline or in emergency situation if there is no internet access nearby you. Your calendar is available offline by default. For more details, you can edit or do changes in your calendar setting page by selecting "offline" category.
